Morris Township

Morris Township is located in northern New Jersey in the center of Morris County. According to the United States Census from 2010, the population is 22,306 with growth from previous censuses. It completely encircles Morristown borough and has an area of 15.7 square miles. The North Branch Whippany River runs along the northern side and Shakespeare Garden is along the southern portion of the township. I-287 runs through the township north-south, providing easy access to other parts of the state.

The township is in the shape of a doughnut, which surrounds Morristown all the way around. This design is not unique. In fact, it is just one of 21 doughnut-shaped municipalities. Commuters can choose either rail or bus service for access to other communities. The most common industries for jobs in Morris Township include technical and professional industries, education, finance and insurance and health care. Children in the township can attend the public schools of the Morris School District. However, there are also several private schools in the community. In fact, more than twice the percentage of children here attend private school as in the entire state with almost a third of them choosing these schools for their education. Almost two-thirds of the students choose a private undergraduate college as opposed to one-third in the entire state for their continuing education.

Approximately 10% of the residents are foreign born with the majority hailing from Asia, Europe or South America. A diverse culture has always been part of Morris Township’s history with ancestries from Italy, Germany, Ireland, Poland, England and Russia. Bordering the township are several other small communities, including Dover and Denville to the northwest, East Hanover to the northeast, Madison to the east, Summit, Berkeley Heights and Westfield to the southeast.
